Student Visa in Canada

study permit is the most important document you will require to be able to pursue your studies in Canada. It serves the purpose of a student visa for the duration of your stay. If you do decide to continue your studies, you can renew your study permit from within Canada. Students enrolled in a full-time course that is registered at an accredited institution with a study permit will allow you to work part-time on campus. You might also be allowed to work off-campus but only as a co-op or an intern as a part of the program. After you graduate, you can reside in Canada as a permanent resident or find work after graduation.

Applying for a Canadian Study permit

To apply for a Canadian study permit, you have two options. One is online and the other is a paper application. The paper application can be obtained from the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) website. Paper applications usually take twice the time an online application takes to get processed. Hence, you will need to check the processing time in advance to weigh your options. You will need a credit or debit card to apply online and the facility to create electronic copies of your supporting documents - using a scanner or camera.

You will be provided with specific instructions about which documents you need to provide by the visa office in your country but this can vary depending on your location. For further assistance, you can always reach out to the nearest visa application center (VAC).

The process for obtaining a Canadian student visa is as follows:

  • You must first receive a standardized letter of acceptance from a recognized higher education provider. For students studying in Quebec, you will need to apply for a certificate of acceptance (CAQ) from the government of Quebec in order to be able to apply for your study permit.
  • Now, you will need to get a Canadian student visa application package. This you can either get from the CIC website or also by contacting your local visa office or the Canadian embassy/consulate in your home country. To get your application package, you will be required to answer a series of questions about yourself on the CIC website. This will determine whether you are eligible to apply online for a student permit and what documents you will need to submit. If eligible, you will be given a personal checklist code valid for 60 days which you will need when submitting your online application.
  • When you are finally ready to apply, you need to create a MyCIC account and enter your personal checklist code. After receiving your personal document checklist, you will be allowed to upload and send your document to the CIC. Once all your documents and application form is ready and you have paid your fees, you can submit your application to CIC.
  • Certain applicants might have to attend an interview at their local visa office.

Additional Canadian student visa requirements:

Some or all of the following additional Canadian student visa requirements may also apply: Applicants from Europe, the Middle East, or Africa may need to provide biometrics (photograph and fingerprints).

Certain applicants might be required to get a medical exam and/or police check before submitting their application. If you have a criminal record, your study permit will be rejected. You may also be asked to provide a Police Clearance Certificate as proof. Unless you’re from the US or St. Pierre and Miquelon, you will need to prove you have a valid passport which allows you to return to your country of origin after your course is complete. Two passport- sized pictures are also required, with your name and date of birth written on the back.

The Canadian student visa also requires you to include proof of your funds to support yourself financially. Currently, the required funds amount to a total of $10,000 (~US$7,650) for each year of your stay, and for Quebec, it is $11,000/~US$8,400. The required amount does not include your tuition fee.

As proof, you can provide any of the following documents:

  • Bank statements
  • Evidence of a Canadian account in your name (if the money’s been transferred)
  • A bank draft in convertible currency
  • Proof of payment of tuition and accommodation fees
  • A letter from a person or institution providing you with money, or proof of funding paid from within Canada if you have a scholarship or are undertaking a Canadian-funded program.

Applying through the Student Direct Stream:

Recently, Canada introduced the Student Direct Stream for students from India, China, the Philippines, or Vietnam. The students from the mentioned countries can apply for this to get their permit faster. The requirements are relatively similar to the regular study permit but there are stricter language requirements. You will be required to have an IELTS score of at least 6 or a 7 in the Niveaux de Compétence Linguistique Canadiens for French or they have to be a graduate from a Canadian-curriculum institution.

Note: If you still choose to apply for the Student Direct Stream even if you’re not eligible for it but are eligible for a regular study permit, your application will be processed as a regular study permit and you will not get faster processing.
